Gary Oakes and Lou
Garcia are both veterans of Broadway and have performed as a vocal duo for many years entertaining television, nightclub, concert, cruise ship and Las Vegas audiences alike to much deserved acclaim. Each, prior to joining their talents into a successful singing team, had achieved individual successes in the entertainment industry. |
Gary Oakes, after receiving a BS degree in secondary education and a MA degree in speech arts from Columbia University, abandoned a career in teaching for one in professional theater when he was chosen by Richard Rodgers for a featured role in the New York revival of the Rodgers and Hart musical The Boys From Syracuse. After a stint in the U.S. Army, he attended the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse School Of The Theater where he studied under the esteemed Sanford Meisner. Gary was featured in the role of Richard Henry Lee in both the national and Broadway companies of the Tony Award winning musical 1776. He later appeared in the off-Broadway production of Shoemakers' Holiday. He has appeared in musical stock companies throughout the United States playing leading roles in such musicals as 'Lil Abner, Brigadoon, South Pacific, Promises, Promises, How Now Dow Jones and most frequently in the role of Curly in Oklahoma. He appeared in the ill-fated pre-Broadway tour of the David Shire/Richard Maltby musical Love Match with Hal Linden and Patricia Routledge and in the American premiere of the London musical Chrysanthemum starring Patrice Munsel. He played the unrequited suitor of Bernadette Peters in the pre-Broadway tour of W.C., the musical based on the life of W.C. Fields starring Mickey Rooney. He sang the role of Freddy in the St. Louis Municipal Opera and the Kansas City Starlight productions of My Fair Lady starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and sang the role of Sid in the San Bernadino Light Opera production of The Pajama Game with funnyman Soupy Sales. Gary was featured in the revues, Medium Rare with Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, Put It In Writing with Estelle Parsons and Dorothy Loudon and Lyrics By Oscar Hammerstein II with Imogene Coca. He was a principal soloist in An Evening Of Kurt Weill at Lincoln Center and was a regular cast member of the television sitcom series Please Stand By.

Lou Garcia, born in Havana, Cuba, came to the U.S. as a very small boy. After graduating from the University of Montana with a BS degree in journalism and television production, he joined the navy where he subsequently became the featured singer with the U.S. Navy Steel Band. Upon his discharge, he decided to make the professional theater his career, and as a singer/dancer went on to perform in the Broadway productions of Zorba starring Herschel Bernardi and Illya Darling starring Melina Mercouri. Lou was featured in the pre-Broadway production of W.C. in the role of Alberto. His numerous summer stock productions include West Side Story, with Anna Maria Alberghetti, Gypsy with Ann Southern, Milk and Honey with Molly Picon and The King And I with Jane Morgan. As a solo night club entertainer, Lou performed in many of the night clubs in and around New York City including The Playboy Club. He also spent many a weekend venturing up to the Catskills to perform at some of its leading entertainment venues. Television appearances include The Tony Awards, The Ed Sullivan Show and specials such as I'm A Fan with Dick Van Dyke and Carol Channing. Lou's first Las Vegas appearance was in the musical Mame starring Juliet Prowse. While performing in the aforementioned W.C., Lou teamed up with fellow cast member Gary and formed the singing duo Gary Oakes and Lou Garcia. Their initial club debut was at the famous New York City nightclub, "Jackie Cannon's Rat Fink Room" where they became the opening act for the well-known comedian. This was followed by bookings in the Catskill as well as in major clubs throughout the country. The pair was chosen by the famous producer and director, Donn Arden, as a featured act for his Las Vegas spectacular production of Hallelujah Hollywood at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Thereafter, they were seen in numerous return engagements at Debbie Reynold's Hotel and Casino and at other Las Vegas venues. TV appearances include The Merv Griffin Show and the Canadian variety show, Celebrity Revue. For many years they were the featured act aboard the ships of many of the major cruise ship lines including Royal Viking Line, Sitmar Cruises, Holland American Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Caribbean Line and Celebrity Cruises. They can currently be seen periodically performing their act in concert on various Las Vegas stages.

Their newly released CD is a compilation of some of the songs featured in their concert appearances. The selections run the gamut from Tin Pan Alley to Broadway and typify the vocal versatility of this dynamic singing duo. |
